Double
Handed Fly Rods, all things fly fishing for all people, I was once told,
seems about right to me.
At the time when
I heard this statement, it didn't mean much to me because at the time
as I was still bogged down in the World of those fly rods, the little
ones, the 9footers and less. Which included casting that looked like
I was chasing away bugs in the sky with their endless progressive loading
of the fly rod.
The 9 footers and
less, these surely must be the most inefficient way to cast a fly ever
invented.
Why casters moved
from Doubles (because fly fishing, as we know it, started with Double
Handed rods) to those 9foot rods, I still wonder, and now today, in
some places in the World, like Australia, the 9 footer is considered
the normal and a Double a strange beast as is the person using one.
Dare to write on an Australian Fly Fishing Forum about using a Double
rod, and they almost eat you alive ! When most other thinking countries
have a more enlighten view of this amazing casting stick and its user,
therefore this reaction from Australia is very strange.
Today, the modern
Double Handed Fly rod comes in a huge range of configurations suitable
for wee beautiful Trout to powerful Overhead Casting saltwater rods,
capable of casting to over 1000grains of rod load.
There are now more
lines than ever before, special application lines for different levels
of skill, locations and distance required. From the Spey casting types
to Skagit lines to Shooting Heads that can be used for Spey casts. The
choice is almost endless.
The use of Leader
lengths that the average 9foot rod user thinks as impossible or just
cannot use, these are common and easy to use with a Double Handed fly
rod.
Welcome to the amazing
World of the Double Handed Fly Rod.
This is a World
where most single handed rod owners, once they discover the enjoyment
of casting a Double, will reluntantly put away their 9' rods, until
such time as they realise the advantages and enjoyment of using a Double
Handed fly rod.
